On Wednesday afternoon (11th January) six students from Redhill travelled to Rugeley Leisure Centre to take part in the Cannock Chase Primary Schools’ netball tournament. With only one game’s experience under their belt, a heavy defeat to West Hill, and many of the other school’s being much larger than ourselves there was not a high level of expectation among the team but nevertheless they were all looking forward to the opportunity and experience.
With 13 schools present they were divided into four groups and after a long wait Redhill began their first game against St Thomas More from Great Wyrley. To great surprise and delight Redhill completely dominated possession and had numerous chances to shoot. The defence of Katie and Chelsea had little to do and the attacking pair of Connor and Shaun linked up brilliantly throughout. After a few missed chances Shaun found the net and then repeated this on two further occasions to complete a brilliant hat-trick and three nil Redhill win.
The second game was against The Croft Primary from Armitage, this looked much more even from the start and after chances for both teams it was the opponents who took the lead but Redhill don’t give up and a superb equaliser was scored by Shaun to make the final score 1-1.
After a long wait with considerable anticipation and apprehension it was announced that Redhill had reached the semi finals. Several much larger schools had already gone home so this was great. Henry Chadwick another school who, like ourselves, place a great importance on sport and have Gamesmark Gold, had been bossing the tournament from the beginning (thanks in no small part to two children in their ranks who are much taller than our children) and had been achieving cricket scores were our opponents. As predicted The Hill Ridware team scored but to their surprise Redhill equalised almost straight away again through Shaun, his 5th of the afternoon! Even after Henry Chadwick went 2-1 ahead the game was fairly even but they found their confidence to score two more to put the game out of Redhill’s reach.
Incidentally Henry Chadwick won the final against St Luke’s in what proved to be a much easier and more comfortable victory than in the semi final against Redhill making our efforts all the more impressive.
I’ve taken Redhill pupils to many sporting events and never failed to be impressed by their sportsmanship, behaviour and effort but there was something about today that just tipped the balance to say it was the best yet. The six children representing our school were simply outstanding ambassadors and a genuine pleasure to be with. Thanks too to coach Mrs Good who already has plans in place to develop the team further to achieve future success. I think she enjoyed the afternoon more than the team.
Well done: Todd, Chelsea, Katie, Amber, Connor, Shaun
