As a school we teach early reading through the Ruth Miskin – Read Write Inc Scheme.
Read Write Inc. Phonics is a complete literacy programme, for 4 to 7 year-olds learning to read and write and for 7 and 8 year-olds needing to catch up quickly. In Nursery our children learn 30 sounds in daily lessons.
In Reception children:
- Read storybooks and non-fiction books closely matched to their developing phonic knowledge
- Take home Phonics storybooks to share
- Read with fluency and expression
- Learn to spell using known sounds
- Write confidently by practising what they want to write out loud first
- Work well with a partner.

Reading at Redhill
Since 2013 it has been a Redhill priority to hear children read everyday if they have a reading age below their reading age. This ensures children practise key skills to ensure they can access all areas of the curriculum & for our older students it ensure they are ready for the demands of high school.
All year groups engage in termly author studies & our English lessons are all based on quality texts. This gives our students a broad experience of books beyond our key reading schemes of Oxford Reading Tree, Bug Club & Accelerated Reader Texts.
Spelling at Redhill
We want spelling at Redhill to be purposeful, practical and fun. By using Rising Stars Spelling, we have a lively and flexible programme which we use in an imaginative way from Year 1 to Year 6.
Learning is taught through written and oral activities, games, stories and rhymes. We use phonetic, visual, rule-based and word-meaning strategies to encourage our children to apply their spellings within their writing.
We encourage children to recall words from memory in spelling bees; break words into their syllables by using sound-letter and phoneme knowledge; use trial and error visualisation to check whether the word looks right and teach the use of a dictionary.
