Bikeability

Bikeability

Over three days at the start of November our Year 5 and 6s took part in a Bikeability course, completing either their Level 1 or Level 2 certificate. The children in Year 6 were up first and those who were able to confidently ride a bike were taken by two qualified instructors who joined us from the Velo Cycling Training Company. Firstly, they completed some safety checks and started riding on the bottom playground completing some simple drills and recognition of when to stop and go. From here they began then two days of training on the roads. They learnt about road safety, how to be aware of oncoming traffic and encountered a range of surfaces and inclines to test their skills on a bike. At the end of the two days those who passed all the criteria were awarded their level 2 Bikeability certificate and badge. On the Thursday it was the turn of our Year 5s who took part in their level 1 Bikeability. This involved again the bike checks, safety discussions and then riding to match set criteria such as stopping and going, signalling from their bike and showing agility to ride a tricky course. At the end of their morning session they were again awarded their Level 1 Bikeability certificate and badge. Finally our instructor for the day led a group of children who were not as confident on a bike in a Learn to Ride scheme. They learnt about how to scoot, use their balance and then built up to riding confidently around the playground. Our instructor was blown away by their use of their Never Giving Up antler and the majority ended riding the session with confidence. Over the course of the three days our wonderful children were lavished with praise from staff and the instructors who left Redhill knowing how incredible and respectful our children are.

The Year 6 and 5s left the courses with a much more in depth understanding of how to ride their bikes safely outside and around the local area.
